The Interval - Book Cover

The Interval

The Brief Window That Shapes Your Eternal Soul

by Jarred Fenlason

You are becoming someone. Not in the vague, inspirational sense—but in the most literal, consequential sense possible. With every choice, every act of faithfulness or neglect, you are forming the person who will exist forever.

The Interval presents a profound yet neglected truth: the brief span between conversion and death is an unrepeatable window of formation where the clay is still soft and the wheel is still turning. What we do in this life—empowered by the Spirit, patterned after Christ—deposits treasure in heaven. Who we become through those same grace-enabled acts shapes the soul we carry into eternity.

Drawing from Scripture, the church fathers, medieval mystics, and modern theologians including C.S. Lewis, Dallas Willard, and N.T. Wright, Jarred Fenlason builds a compelling case that eternal life has already begun. Heaven is not a great equalizer where all differences dissolve into uniform bliss. Scripture speaks of differentiated reward—crowns given for specific faithfulness, cities governed in proportion to proven stewardship, glory varying as star differs from star.

Yet this is not a call to anxious striving. Salvation remains by grace alone. What differs is what we do with that grace during the interval—the capacity we develop, the character we form, the treasure we transfer. Death will fire the kiln, and what emerges will be the person we carry into forever.

The Interval is written for sincere believers who may be faithfully serving yet lack awareness of how their earthly formation translates directly into eternal capacity and vocation. It combines scholarly depth with pastoral warmth, offering not pressure but profound hope: this life matters more than we imagined, and the grace to live it well is already ours.

The window is open. The Potter's hands are at work. What kind of soul are you becoming?

"It made me want to spend more time alone with the Lord. I felt excitement like a child waiting in anticipation for Him—the Almighty—to speak to me."

"Hearing from God has been difficult for me. But now I've had experiences where I actually heard things for people that blessed them. The lights are coming on. The connections are being made. Oh... that's what it feels like to have God talk to you. That's what it sounds like. I recognize it now."

Intra Muros

My Dream of Heaven — An Annotated Edition

by Rebecca Ruter Springer · Edited by Jarred Fenlason

In 1898, during a grave illness, Rebecca Ruter Springer experienced something extraordinary: a vivid vision of heaven so detailed and alive that she felt compelled to share it with the world.

Intra Muros—"Within the Walls"—has comforted millions of readers for over a century. In Springer's heaven, the departed are not distant or strange but recognizably themselves: building homes, learning new skills, reuniting with those they loved on earth. And at the center of it all stands Christ—not as a distant king, but as Elder Brother and Friend.

Intra Muros is not a theological treatise but the record of one woman's encounter—offered, as Springer herself said, with the hope that "it may comfort and uplift some who read."

This new annotated edition brings fresh context to Springer's beloved classic. A historical introduction situates the book within Victorian America, an era of high mortality, deep grief, and intense longing for assurance about the afterlife. Throughout the complete, unabridged text, annotations trace Scripture allusions to their sources, identify the real people Springer names, explain archaic language, and offer theological and pastoral reflections for contemporary readers.

Drawing on biblical scholarship, Victorian history, and theological reflection, this edition illuminates what nineteenth-century readers would have understood instinctively and helps contemporary readers encounter the text anew. Whether you are approaching death yourself, walking alongside someone who is, or simply longing for a richer vision of what awaits, this edition invites you to step through the gates and see what Rebecca Springer saw.

Hidden in God - Book Cover

Hidden in God

The Life and Writings of Gerhard Tersteegen

by Gerhard Tersteegen · Edited by Jarred Fenlason

The most comprehensive English collection of Gerhard Tersteegen's writings in nearly 200 years—now modernized for a new generation of readers.

In 1724, a young silk ribbon weaver in a small German town signed a covenant to God in his own blood. He then spent the rest of his life in quiet obscurity, making ribbons by day and caring for the sick and poor by night. Yet from that hidden life, Gerhard Tersteegen (1697–1769) became one of the most sought-after spiritual guides in all of Europe.

Thousands traveled to his tiny cottage on the Ruhr seeking counsel for their souls. His hymns—including "Lo, God Is Here" and "Thou Hidden Love of God," later translated by John Wesley—are still sung in churches worldwide. And his letters, treatises, and sermons have nourished seekers across every Christian tradition for nearly three centuries.

Hidden in God brings together, for the first time in a single volume, the complete English translations of Samuel Jackson's landmark 1832 and 1837 editions of Tersteegen's works—long out of print and nearly impossible to find. Every page has been carefully modernized: archaic vocabulary updated, tangled nineteenth-century sentences untangled, and formatting refined—all while preserving Tersteegen's warmth, theological precision, and unmistakable devotional power.

This collection includes:

  • A Full Biography — The remarkable story of a man who abandoned a promising scholarly career for a life of voluntary poverty, endured five years of crushing spiritual darkness, and emerged as a pastor to thousands—without ever being ordained.
  • 25 Pastoral Letters — Tersteegen at his most intimate, responding to real people in real struggles: the new convert wondering how to begin, the advanced soul lost in spiritual dryness, the scrupulous conscience tormented by small faults, the discouraged believer ready to give up.
  • 8 Theological Treatises — Including his celebrated writings on inward prayer, faith and justification, the nature of true godliness, and the hidden life with Christ in God.
  • 8 SermonsSpiritual Crumbs from the Master's Table, Tersteegen's extemporaneous discourses covering everything from Christ's weeping over Jerusalem to the believer's rest, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and the constraining love of Christ.
  • Hymns and Verses — Sacred poetry from one whom Bunsen called "the foremost master of spiritual song."

Tersteegen's central message is as countercultural now as it was in the eighteenth century: that the deepest life is the hidden one. That God is found not in noise and activity but in the secret center of the soul. That poverty of spirit, self-surrender, and the slow death of self-love are not the enemies of joy—they are the doorway to it.

For readers of Thomas à Kempis, Brother Lawrence, François Fénelon, Jeanne Guyon, and the Christian mystics. For anyone hungry for something deeper than what modern devotional literature typically offers.

"All that I have written I have myself experienced as important truths." — Gerhard Tersteegen

The Spiritual Flower Garden - Complete eBook

The Spiritual Flower Garden

The First Complete English Translation of Gerhard Tersteegen's Geistliches Blumengärtlein

by Gerhard Tersteegen · Translated & Edited by Jarred Fenlason

For nearly three hundred years, one of Christianity's most treasured devotional works has remained locked behind a language barrier. Gerhard Tersteegen's Geistliches BlumengärtleinThe Spiritual Flower Garden—shaped German-speaking piety for generations, yet no complete English translation has ever existed. Until now.

Gerhard Tersteegen (1697–1769) was a Reformed Pietist mystic whose influence spread far beyond his quiet life as a ribbon weaver in Mülheim. After five years of spiritual darkness, he emerged with a voice that combined the contemplative depth of the Rhenish mystics with the practical warmth of evangelical devotion. His writings do not argue or perform—they simply speak, with the calm authority of one who knows the terrain because he has walked it.

The Complete Spiritual Flower Garden Contains:

  • Book I: Short and Edifying Verse — Over four hundred brief poems distilling the essence of the spiritual life: self-denial, yieldedness, divine love, and union with God.
  • Book II: Meditations and Spiritual Verses — One hundred twenty meditations pairing prose reflections with poetic responses, guiding the reader through the soul's thirst for God, self-abandonment, and complete surrender.
  • Book III: Spiritual Hymns and Devotions — One hundred twenty-two hymns spanning the full range of Christian experience. Many shaped German Protestant hymnody for centuries; now they speak in English for the first time.
  • The Devout Man's Lottery — Over four hundred brief maxims originally designed to be drawn at random for daily meditation.

This translation preserves Tersteegen's theological precision while rendering his voice in clear, contemporary English. Key mystical terms—Gelassenheit (yieldedness), Gemüt (inmost heart), Seelengrund (Ground of the soul)—are translated according to their historical meaning within the Rhenish mystical tradition. A glossary of key terms is included.

"May God lure you more and more out of yourself and all created things. May He lead you into the sweet wilderness of inner solitude, and there speak to your soul like a friend." —Gerhard Tersteegen

Jarred Fenlason

About the Author

Jarred Fenlason, D.Min., is a teacher and writer drawn to the voices of those who have crossed the threshold from knowing about God to knowing Him. He holds a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary, where his research focused on discipleship and equipping believers to encounter the power, presence, and love of God.

His discipleship work has trained over 200 pastors across six countries, and his years spent collecting the writings of Christian mystics and spiritual guides led him to produce the first complete English translation of Gerhard Tersteegen's Spiritual Flower Garden — a work that had waited nearly three centuries for an English audience.

His passion is to awaken believers to the eternal weight of ordinary days — and to the One who is shaping them for eternity.

Jarred lives in the foothills of North Carolina with his wife, Rochelle. They have three adult children.
