Catholic Schools in New York City

Politico had a story (here) about the Archdiocese of New York developing its own charter school system in response to plunging enrollment. Catholic schools were closing, and enrollment was down 35% in the last decade. This is a huge drop, especially when you consider that NYC had a large influx of Latino immigrants, most of whom are Catholic. When your “sales” plunge 35% despite a growing market for your product, you’ve got a very serious problem.

Politico had good things to say about the new charter system, but this was largely based on attitudes of teachers and administrators, who would be expected to be enthusiastic about the new system. The article has few facts, and none concerning student achievement. Time will tell.
