Catholic Church Accused of Defrauding Norway

Norway has accused a Catholic bishop of submitting fraudulent membership numbers in order to increase the size of its government subsidy (here). Estimates of it flock were exaggerated by as much as 65,000 – more than 40% of its claimed membership. The chief bishop faces criminal charges and up to six years in prison. He claims innocence while admitting errors, and has the support of the Vatican.

CRUX ran an article by the Catholic News Agency which reports on the alleged fraud (here). It makes no mention of the magnitude of the fraud. Neither the Religious News Service (RNS) nor the National Catholic Reporter (NCR) covered the story.

No article explains why Norway subsidizes religions like this. It discriminates against secular citizens, and offers an attractive target for charlatans.
