Graham says Planned Parenthood is like “Nazi Death Camp”

Franklin Graham is on the warpath again. This time he attacked Barbara Pierce Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush (here). The Graham and Bush families have long been friends. But Barbara is raising money for Planned Parenthood, and Graham’s hatred for Planned Parenthood is overwhelming, making an enemy of anyone who befriends his enemy. Not only does Graham reject Jesus’ call to love your enemy, his boundless hatred overflows to his friends.

Graham also smears Planned Parenthood. Not content with merely protesting abortion, he claims “this is the organization whose employees were caught on video trying to sell baby body parts over wine. Disgusting.” This video has repeatedly been shown to be a fabrication, created in the editing room. (Planned Parenthood donates fetal tissue for medical research, but does not sell or profit from it). A Texas grand jury, which normally indicts virtually everyone, when shown this video not only rejected the charges against Planned Parenthood, they indicted its creator for fraud (here). Mr. Graham certainly knew this, but he has a nasty habit of bearing false witness. For example, he repeatedly charges that Islam is an evil religion that worships a different god than Jews and Christians. (In fact, Islam worships the God of Abraham, and even worships Jesus as a prophet.)

After repeating this falsehood, Mr. Graham said, “Raising funds for [Planned Parenthood] is like raising money to fund a Nazi death camp—like Auschwitz.” It is obvious that these organizations have almost nothing in common, but Mr. Graham once again strives for the greatest possible smear. He knows that inmates in Auschwitz were placed there by armed forces. No one went to the camps voluntarily. Mr. Franklin also knows that users of Planned Parenthood do so voluntarily. In fact, many clients desperately seek their services. Contrary to the Nazi camps, government compulsion is only used to prevent people from using Planned Parenthood, often at the behest of evangelicals. I don’t think that even Franklin Graham is dumb enough to believe his comparison. It is just another example of his demagoguery, and his willingness to use evil means to support his chosen ends.

The Christian Post article does not criticize any of Graham’s false and hateful claims. The evangelical press is happy to “report” falsehoods and smears that support their views. Jesus’ central teaching was to love your neighbor as yourself. This message almost never appears in evangelical media. On the contrary, Graham is usually attacking his enemies, often illegitimately, and doing his best to rabble-rouse. Jesus told his followers, “judge not lest ye be judged.” Christians are not only supposed to obey Jesus, but to emulate him. Franklin Graham never even tries.
