Vatican Financial Crimes and Hypocrisy

John Allen of CRUX weighed in on the Vatican's first trial for financial crimes. The Secretary of State under Pope Benedict had a 4500 square foot apartment built for himself. This is roughly three times the size of an average house. Needless to say, nothing is said of his vow of poverty. The Secretary of State not only ignored competitive bidding requirements, he seems to have used $500,000 from a children’s hospital to fund his extravagance.  Allen called it “singular” and “anomalous.” But that’s what the Vatican said about the initial reports of clerical child abuse. Since the Vatican releases virtually no information about its finances, Mr. Allen seems to be taking another unwarranted leap of faith.
