New Republican Tax Proposal Lets Churches Support Politicians

RNS (here), unlike mainstream media, pointed out a key provision of the new Republican tax “reform.” It repeals the Johnson Amendment, which “prohibits tax-exempt charitable organizations such as churches from participating directly or indirectly in any political campaign to support or oppose a candidate." Even though the Johnson Amendment has not been enforced for some time, it still inhibits the worst sort of abuses. Repeal will invite widespread corruption under the guise of religion.
