Abuse of Power – A Reminder

“Last week Kate Murray, a student at Sacred Heart Greenwich Girls’ school in Connecticut, was given an ultimatum: ‘Remove a Planned Parenthood sticker from your laptop computer or be expelled.’ (here).

Quickly, about 3,000 people signed a petition threatening to withhold funds: “Unless Kate is allowed her freedom of speech, all of my future donations that would have been allocated to Sacred Heart Greenwich will now and forever be donated to Planned Parenthood.” The leaders of the Catholic school quickly backed down.

Thankfully, the Church has squandered it power. But this is a reminder of its long history of abusing power. The Office of the Inquisition is still one of the Vatican’s most powerful, though it has changed its name (to CDF). But abuse of power is a Church tradition that is usually not far from the surface. Even in its diminished capacity, the Church nearly managed to escape all liability for sexually abusing children - something right up there with mass murder. It has certainly eluded justice.
