World Governments Play Catch-up

Joshua McElwee is the Vatican correspondent for National Catholic Reporter (NCR). He just published a new “analysis” – “Bishops' prosecutions may point to new phase in church's sex abuse crisis.” The main point is that governments around the world have previously been afraid to prosecute bishops and the hierarchy. But they now realize that the public no longer reflexively supports the Church. Suddenly many bishops and even cardinals around the world are being prosecuted for their involvement in crimes of child abuse. The analysis is worth reading just to get a glimmer of the scope of the crimes that have been concealed. The whitewash is off. It remains to be seen how hard they’ll search for the skeletons in the closet, and how high they’ll pursue responsibility for the crimes.
