New Trends in Paganism

In The Revealer: “On Being Pagan in Prison.” Apparently paganism is making inroads among prisoners. This is a nice version of paganism, not the kind usually associated with skinheads and neo-Nazi types. Many religions have found new converts among prisoners.

Black Muslims drew many of their members from prison. Malcom X was one of them. After spending time in prison for all those dirty tricks performed for President Nixon, Chuck Colson saw the light and became an evangelical Christian. He started a successful missionary effort to convert other prisoners, and was widely applauded for his efforts.

Something about prisons seems to bring out spiritual seeking. It also tends to make relatively well-behaved first offenders into hardened criminals. I am not sure how these are related. I suspect both are indications that our prison system needs reform.
