Who Trusts Scientists?
A major survey on trust in science: “These are the countries that trust scientists the most—and the least.”
It turns out that countries with the greatest trust in science are those that are fleeing (or have fled) the Catholic Church. Africa is the region with the greatest growth in Catholicism, and they have by far the least trust in science. South America, which holds the most Catholics, is second in distrust.
They also studied perceived knowledge about science versus actual knowledge. It turns out that the U.S. is global leader in arrogance – having the highest self-perceived knowledge. Their actual knowledge, while good, is not exceptional. Singapore is a model of humility. Brazil, the most populous Catholic country, proudly and accurately proclaims their ignorance.
